XP8 have made a name for themselves with their energetic live performances all over Europe. Aimed at the heart of the dancefloor, XP8's music keeps listeners moving through the night in timeless waves, emitting subtle hints of the 1980s while slipping easily into sounds of the new millennium: glitchy patterns, sharp simulated strings, and clear vocals travel through bright sequences and brooding atmospheres. Their third studio album, The Art Of Revenge, was released early this year to rave reviews.
MODULATE
Modulate is the hard industrial project of Manchester based DJ Geoff Lee. Geoff is one of the resident DJs at alternative/industrial club night, The Wendy House, on the Mutate industrial/hard dance floor. Signed to Infacted, the debut Skullfuck EP went crashing straight into the German DAC alternative charts reaching number 6 and number 3 in the Greek Alternative Chart giving the band a worldwide club hit that was described as "the industrial scene's club hit of the year" in ReGen magazine. .
UBERBYTE
UberByte is the dark industrial band formed by Killing Miranda frontman Uberman in late 2006. Musically Uberbyte are surprisingly diverse, driven by beats fierce enough for power noize and flexible enough for modern EBM, not to mention a voice which handles everything from an inhuman rasp to powerful roaring melodies. The mix is joyously enraged, empowered and ready for the industrial nation, reborn in fire and steel.
ACTION DIRECTE
Action Directe are the enfants terrible of the UK industrial-punk scene. Moving on from the punk heat generated by their output since 2005, their new album "Troika" sees a darker, more layered edge to their trademark industrial steam hammering, sounding bleaker, colder, deeper and darker than anything the band has attempted before.
NOVUS UK
Novus UK are a female-fronted 2-piece hard electro outfit. Creating a fusion of pumped underground beats with a cut glass vocal performance, the band consists of the English rose of UK darkbeat, Sarahjane (ex-Faithful Dawn) and the one man industrial noise terrorist Jonathon Sharp of Bio-Tek, New Mind, and Hexedene infamy.
INKUBUS SUKKUBUS
Inkubus Sukkubus are the UK's foremost pagan rock band, with a musical alchemy that touches folk and classical alongside more rock and gothic elements. If you could imagine Fleetwood Mac melded with Sleeping Dogs Wake with a touch of the Sisters' grandiose orchestrations you would get pretty close to their raison d'être. Truly they have managed to turn lead into gold with the essential elements of Candia's distinctive voice and Tony's memorable guitar lines. (novak)
UNINVITED GUEST
Uninvited Guest stormed the UK alternative scene in 2005 with their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Faith In Oblivion’. Three years in the making, the resulting opus quickly became known for its eclectic blend of a gothic, glam, industrial rock sound. Recent follow-up album ‘Malice In Wonderland’ is more mature and theatrical in sound and altogether darker in character. With the addition of new bassist Jane Dalton (formerly the creative mind behind ‘Squid’ and ‘616 Abortions’), the band promise alluring visuality and electrifying performances.
CORROSION
Corrosion fuse a mix of 80s electronic influences such as Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk with guitar work in the mould of bands like Bauhaus and early Cult. Formed in 2001, Corrosion feature Paul Roe's intense lingering vocals over Matt North's (All Living Fear) guitar, creating a "suitably loud and boisterous live rock sound" (Nemesis). Their early track 'The Elemental' won Meltdown's demo of the year, and was followed by 2004's debut album, N-Y-A-G-A, which included floor fillers such as 'Speak And Destroy'.
RAZORBLADEKISSES
RazorBladeKisses is a unique band comprised of an unusual blend of varying talents. Hailing from distant Persia, the two female vocalists Layla and Azadeh create unique lyrical and dark melodies, which are ever contradicting, genre defying and teasingly challenging to musical boundaries. RazorBladeKisses deliver what can only be described as the secret recipe for a twisted dark fairytale that would have children crawling into corners clutching their dolls and toys.
MANUSKRIPT
Manuskript have earned their reputation as being one of the most original and exciting bands on the UK underground/alternative scene, having been conceived under the influence of the vibrant 80's new-romantics and 90's dark-wave movements. Drawing on influences such as Ultravox and Japan, Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails, Manuskript convey their energy without compromise. Their unique sound is characterized by unerring vocal lines, which weave in and out of a backdrop of grandiose synthesisers and searing guitars - all cemented with a pounding, electronic rhythm section.
ZEITGEIST ZERO
Zeitgeist Zero are undeniably Goth, but not in the traditional sense. Simultaneously jaunty and jaundiced, they have been described by Kaleidoscope as "like Switchblade Symphony shredded through Garbage’s mid-period, then drip-fed Lydia Lunch". Playing guitar-fuelled electro goth for the next generation of goths that we see in our clubs today (Hardwired), Zeitgeist Zero are taking a rare break from mixing their second album to play this year's Woolstock.
SPARES
Spares is the latest project from Simon Manning, guitarist from the legendary Children On Stun. Spares still enjoy the driving guitar sound of Stun, but vocals now come from Alison Gann, who has "natural flair for a somewhat Shirley Manson-esque croon" (starvox). Their recent album contains tracks that nod to Massive Attack, Rammstein and Skeletal Family, whilst still retaining a rich sound than remains unique.
DYONISIS
Dyonisis danced out of the musical pandora's box whilst no-one was looking, bringing with them a breath of musical fresh air and playing layered ethereal soundscapes driven along by pulsing basslines. Two voices, individual from each other yet blending together, weaving emotion, memories and impressions into songs embroidered by haunting guitarlines. Formed in 2005 the band hit the live scene running, playing with the likes of NFD and Emilie Autumn, and going on to win the WGW "Battle Of The Bands" last year.
VENUE...
The Subculture, Wade Lane, Leeds
The Subculture (previously known as The Bassment and Top Cats) is located on the outside of the Merrion Centre on Wade Lane, only just around the corner from Merrion Street. The Merrion centre itself is situated roughly halfway between the train station and the university. Click here for Google Map (note that the pointer is a little misleading, the venue is much nearer the corner of Wade Lane and Merrion Street).
Directions from the Train Station: Take the first exit from the station (opposite end of the first concourse opposite the barriers, By Burger King and Paperchase) turn right, and follow the road along the side of the station (where the taxis often wait) until it curves left. Follow the curve left and then cross the main road and head up the pedestrianised area. Go to the top of the pedestrianised area (passing the like of Zavvi - previously Virgin - and Boots) and carry up along the same road. Continue over the junction and straight up, passing along the side of the St John's Centre. You've probably already spotted the hulking 60s monstrosity of the Merrion Centre ahead of you... it's got Oceana on the corner, with Edwards next to it. Bear right and cross over to the Merrion Centre at the pedestrian crossing, go right along the front of the Centre, and round the corner past Greggs. The venue entrance is just round the corner, on the left. By Car: There are comprehensive directions to the venue here (note that these are for a clubnight that used to run at the venue before it changed names). Car Parks: There are numberous car parks within easy reach of the venue, including APPEAL...
